07/11/09i don't know why the last few group dances that i've made have been wrapped around the idea of a prophetess or some female archetype of mystical proportions......but they have and i've had fun making them.
when the opportunity and desire to make a new dance came along, once again i was drawn to this idea.
the first one .........
when the prophetess suffered was for 7 women and an angrogynous, lip-syncing stranger.
the second one.......
7 maidens & the afterlife of centuries was for 7 women and involved a libretto that served as the backbone of the action.
the third one.....
dear prophetess, we came to the wall but couldn't read your handwriting was a solo that displayed 3 versions of another woman in the midst of collapsible walls.
and here i am fiddling around with the prophetess again....
this time it's
3 boys & an old prophetess...............
eric falck, jeff fouch, michael j. morris and i had our first rehearsal last thursday night at my house and i immediately felt like i was very likely in the space with 3 very likely candidates for the role of "prophetess"......even though i had originally envisioned "me" as the "female" in the dance. so now i'm completely throwing the notion of rules or preconceived ideas out of the window and am going to see where this undeniable energy between us all will take us.
a possible role-playing switcheroo may be in store for all of us.
anyway. here are the notes from our first rehearsal. i'm a note taker. a journal addict. so there may be several of these as the piece comes together.
EXERCISES:1. improvise while observing one another and allow a story to unfold internally and react/act/interact accordingly.2. same as #1 but seek arc of story - beginning - middle - end.short: 1 -2 minutes
try this 3-4 times.
Really try to decide the course of events into being.
Concentrate on active, demonstrative construction while improvising.
Didn't share stories. Let them stay inside.
3. CoCo make a short, easy dance.Jeff apply space. MJM apply time. Eric apply quality. CoCo make a few changes and add focus directive.
Add singing...."you can't always get what you want...."
Practice little dance.
4. Jeff and MJM wreck the little dance. CoCo and Eric perform little dance.
More wrecking.
More performing.
CoCo then asks Jeff and MJM to perform it without practicing or premeditating. Just go.
CoCo and Eric observe.
NUGGETS:a. entrance walking with hand hold
b. seeking "who's in front?"
c. peering under arm while silently singing "you can't always get what you want" with last line outloud.
d. soft and fluffy thrust
e. equal holding on and pulling apart
f. seeking 2nd hand hold - discovering what it feels like.
While Jeff and MJM discussed wrecking strategies, Eric and CoCo made shape dance with piggy sounds.Plans for next rehearsal:1. STOP/GO - I love this tool.
2. Karl Cronin's Walking Tour
3. Word Assocation with action translation
4. Assign a word or chunk of words or let everyone pick. Make solo.
5. EACH make boy solo.
6. EACH make prophetess solo.
7. Mine nuggets from REH #1 for more extreme or subtle version of nuggets.
HOMEWORK to bring to REH #3:1. bring example of favorite storyteller from literature, film, poetry, spoken word, tv, music, etc.
2. bring story of your own to tell
This may be 2 or 3 rehearsals worth of stuff but wanted to get it all down before I forgot something.
QUESTIONS:1. what is popular culture?
2. what is pop art?
3. what is the underbelly of pop culture?
4. why did i just think of mini-trampoline, jump rope, pogo stick, hulahoop, roller skates, lemon drop jump, push scooter, skate board, hacky sack?
5. what is the importance of the concept of "fit" in dance-making. as in "that fits...." or "that doesn't fit"?
a mode of interacting with world. of consuming? or presenting waht we've consumed?
buying into and re-presenting what we've purchased or re-displaying mass behavior?
til next time.
